CHAPTER ONE

Part One · The System Isn't Broken; It's Working Exactly As Designed

Let's say you want to make a cake.

Not for a birthday. Not for fun. You're making a cake because someone is hungry. A lot of someones. And this cake, you're told, is the only thing standing between them and going to bed empty.

So you gather your ingredients. You get a bowl. You start measuring, relieved there's just enough. Then someone walks in and says they'll help. They hand you an envelope and say, "Here's some money. Make three cakes."

You feel a glimmer of hope—until they keep talking. "Oh! Quick note. You can't use any of the money we gave you on the mixer, the oven, or your time. All of that has to come from somewhere else. Also, we'd like monthly photos of the cake. Prove exactly how it's helping or we'll stop funding you."

You blink. You try to explain that cakes don't just bake themselves. But they've already left. Off to fund another cake. Probably a chocolate one.

You make the cake. Somehow. Maybe your sister lends you an oven. Maybe you skip sleep and whisk by hand at 3 a.m. You serve the cake with pride. It's underbaked. One side's burnt. But it exists.

The people eat it.

They ask for seconds.

And you realize you have to do this again tomorrow.

Welcome to the nonprofit sector. Where every act of goodness is expected to be miraculous, and miracles are expected to cost nothing.

Disruptive Giving doesn't fix the cake. It questions not only the recipe, but the kitchen and the entire way we measure baking goods.

What if the hungry people could own the oven?

THIS ISN'T ABOUT CHARITY ANYMORE. IT'S ABOUT CAPACITY.

THE AUTHORS

CHANTAL CARR

Author · CEO, Disruptive Giving · Co-founder, Hope Arising

Chantal didn't write this book from the safety of theory. She wrote it from the trenches — two decades teaching business to women in rural Africa, watching what happens when donor dollars arrive without dignity, and what's possible when trust, creativity, and sustainability take the lead. She's the creator of the Disruptive Giving framework: operational sustainability, built on human dignity.

JEN GREYSON

Co-author · COO, Disruptive Giving

Jen is a storyteller who builds things — a bestselling author turned editorial architect who's spent her career finding the structure inside someone else's vision and making it hold weight on the page. For Disruptive Giving, she took twenty years of field experience, three characters worth of narrative, and a framework that could reshape an entire sector, and built it into a book.
